Part of growing up is learning how to think for ourselves and not just go along with the crowd. In this week's portion, as the Jewish people were about to move into the land of Israel that God had promised them, they sent a group of spies ahead of them to scout things out. When the spies returned to the people, most of them started spreading destructive negative rumors about the land. However, two of the spies, Caleb and Joshua, refused to go along and were brave enough to tell the people the truth - that the land was really good. We can learn from them the value of thinking independently and not being afraid to swim against the tide.

In our story, a kid learns a surprising lesson about the power of independent thinking.

"FEARLESS"

In Jay's school, if you weren't a member of some group of friends or club, you just weren't 'part of things.' There were different groups for different kinds of kids, but one thing everyone agreed on was that the coolest, most popular group of kids in the whole school was 'The Fearless Ones.'

Its leader, Kyle Jacobs, was not only captain of both the school football and baseball teams but a straight A student to boot. Tall, good looking and oozing with charisma, Kyle was just the kind of kid that everyone wanted to be around.

One day Jay found a note tucked into his locker telling him he was one of the 'privileged few' from his class invited to join 'The Fearless Ones.' You can bet he was more than thrilled. The note said he should come after school at 5:00 pm - and no later - to the equipment building on the far end of the baseball field for his club 'initiation'.

Jay had a hard time paying attention in school that day, and after rushing home and blasting through his homework and chores, he jumped on his bike and made to the designated spot just in time.

"Hey Jay, congratulations!" came a familiar voice from just inside the door. It was Pete, a friend of his from class.

"You made it into the Fearless Ones too? That's great!" Jay smiled. "Anybody else from our class?"

"Just Bob, and he's already in that side room over there with Kyle for his initiation. Out of our class of 35, it seems like only the three of us were cool enough to join." The guys were laughing when suddenly the door burst open and Bob came stumbling out. He was hacking and coughing and looked greener than the tarpaulin rolled up along the wall.

"Hey are you okay?" cried Jay.

"Yeah ... cough ... cough ... I guess so." he said. "They make you smoke ... cough ... one whole cigarette before they let you join. Kyle said everyone does it. I never smoked before and ... cough ... cough ... I feel really sick. But at least I got my club card and ... cough ... made it into the group. Gotta go!" he said, throwing his hand over his mouth and running outside, full speed.

"Next!" came a sharp cry from the direction of the inner room. The boys looked up and saw Kyle pointing straight at Pete.

"Are you going in there?" whispered Jay.

"Of course." said Pete. Isn't that why we're here?"

"Yeah, but what about the cigarette thing? You don't smoke do you?"

"Me, smoke? No way!"

"So?"

"But, look," Pete shrugged, "They said everyone does it before they join and if that's the price of being a member, I guess I'll have to do it too."

"Let's go!" Kyle said sharply, and before Jay was able to answer back, his friend had slipped through the door.

Jay sat now alone and confused. He so much wanted to join this elite group but he certainly didn't want to smoke. He knew it was really bad for him. But if everyone else was doing it, even his friends...well, maybe...

A few minutes later, the door burst open again. This time it was Pete coughing his guts out just as Bob had done minutes before. Jay thought he heard laughter from the inner room.

"Last but not least!" Kyle called out to Jay.

Jay swallowed hard and walked into the small room. It reeked of smoke.

"Have a seat, Jay," smiled Kyle, pointing to a small chair across from him and Vince, his right hand man.

"Well, congratulations," Kyle said, holding out his big hand. "You have now made it to 'The Fearless Ones,' the #1 club in this or any other school. See you at the next meeting." Jay smiled back nervously. Maybe that was it and he was off the hook. He started to get up when, Kyle held up his hand to stop him.

"But first ... we have a little initiation ceremony for all our new members." Kyle lit a cigarette and held it out to Jay. "Smoke this."

"Um, no thanks, I don't smoke," said Jay, quietly. Vince burst into laughter.

"I don't think you get it," Kyle said. "You don't have a choice. To be a member of 'The Fearless Ones' you have to show you're fearless by smoking one whole cigarette. Everybody has to do it. You do want to be part of our club, don't you?"

Jay nodded.

"Good. So prove it."

Kyle held out the cigarette again. Jay started to reach out for it, then paused a long moment. It wouldn't be easy, but Jay knew what he had to do. He took a deep breath, looked the older boy straight in the eyes and shook his head, no.

"Kyle, I can't tell you how much I want to be part of the group, but I believe smoking is wrong. Even doing it just once. I'd like to join but if that's what it takes, then I can't." Jay got up, turned and started to walk out.

"Wait a minute."

Jay stopped and looked behind him. Were they going to yell at him or call him names?

"Nobody ever spoke his mind straight to me like that in here before." Kyle said. "Everyone either just takes the cigarette or runs out of here like a scared rabbit.'

Kyle put out the cigarette and reached into a drawer and took out an official 'Fearless One's' membership card. He tossed it to Jay, who happily caught it.

"I guess we can bend the rules this one time, huh Vince? After all, I think you just showed us that someone can be more fearless by not taking the cigarette than by taking it."

Ages 3-5

Q. How did Jay's friends feel about smoking the cigarette?
A. They felt like it was a bad thing to do, but did it anyway because they wanted to join the club.

Q. How did Jay feel about it?
A. He also wanted to join the club, but he wouldn't do something bad just because they said he had to and everyone else did it.

Ages 6-9

Q. What life lesson can you take out of this story?
A. Sometimes we can be tempted to 'just go along' and do something we know isn't right just because everyone else is or we feel pressured, but a truly fearless person sticks to his values and isn't afraid to speak out even in uncomfortable circumstances.

Q. Why do you think Kyle decided to let Jay into the club even though he didn't smoke the cigarette?
A. We might not realize it, but when we stand up for our values instead of just going with the tide, people have a lot of respect for us. That is what happened here. But even if Kyle hadn't let him in, Jay still made the right decision and in the end would be glad he did.

Ages 10 and Up

Q. Can a person be an independent thinker and conform to the people around him at the same time? Why or why not?
A. Independent thinking isn't about conforming or not conforming. It means that we look at what is happening around us with open eyes and decide whether it is right or wrong based on our own values, rather than because 'everyone says so.' If what people are doing around is fine, there is no reason not to conform. If it isn't, then we shouldn't be afraid not to conform and do what's right anyway.

Q. Does independent thinking mean we shouldn't ask others advice? A. Not at all. Asking and considering the advice of experienced people whose values we respect is a valuable way to gather all the information we need to be able to genuinely think independently and arrive at an informed decision.

A7News: EU to Transfer 100 Million Euros to the PA
06.18.06 (12:53 pm)   [edit]
EU to Transfer 100 Million Euros to the PA
 By Nissan Ratzlav-Katz

The European Union plans to transfer 100 million euros to the Palestinian Authority while bypassing the PA's terrorist-led government.

According to a decision reached by EU leaders on Friday in Brussels, the funds will be earmarked for healthcare, electricity supplies and support for poor families in the PA. A mechanism to transfer the money directly to the targets of the largesse, bypassing the official Hamas-led PA government, is to be in place by early July, according to EU spokeswoman Emma Udwin.

The EU has included Hamas on its list of terrorist groups and has frozen funds to the PA since the Islamist group took control of the PA legislature in March. Previously, the EU contributed 500 million euros to the PA every year.

Final approval of the plan to hand over the aid is expected from the the other members of the Quartet - the United States, Russia and the United Nations.

In their statement announcing their decision, the EU leaders urged Israel to resume the transfer of over $50 million worth of tax revenues collected on behalf of the PA. They noted that the Israeli monies could also be transferred using the EU "Hamas-bypass" mechanism.

In addition, the EU statement urged Arab states to "consider early and substantial contributions." The Arab League donated $50 million to the PA in April and agreed to transfer $40 million more at a later date. Separately, Saudi Arabia pledged $92 million.

A7News: Modhitzer Rebbe Passes Away
06.18.06 (12:52 pm)   [edit]
Modzhitzer Rebbe Passes Away
 By Hillel Fendel

The funeral procession of the Modzhitzer Rebbe, Rabbi Yisrael Dan Taub, left Bnei Brak Friday morning for Jerusalem, where he was buried on the Mt. of Olives.

The Rebbe, 78, a member of the Agudat Yisrael Council of Torah Sages, was buried next to the gravesite of his father, the previous Modzhitzer Rebbe, known as the Imrei Eish.

The Modzhitz (pronounced Mojitz, with a soft j) Hassidut descends from Rabbi Yechezkel of Kuzmir, a student of the venerated Seer of Lublin; the deceased Rebbe was Rabbi Yechezkel's grandson's great-grandson. It is renowned for its famous melodies, hundreds of which were composed by the late Rabbi Taub, his father and his grandfather. Many of them are sung in Jewish communities, households and synagogues around the world.

The deceased Rebbe's grandfather, Rabbi Sha'ul Taub, who served as the Rebbe from 1920, composed new melodies for the Hallel prayer in the form of marches. It is reported that when his followers questioned this style, he explained that a Jewish State would soon come into being and that marches would then be needed.

The deceased Rabbi Taub was born in Warsaw in 1928, and moved to the Holy Land (Palestine) in 1936 with his parents. He led his flock for many years from his Beit Medrash on Dizengoff St. in Tel Aviv, and later in Bnei Brak.

Within the past six weeks, the Grand Rabbis of Satmar, Kretchnif and Modzhitz have passed away, as have Rabbi Moshe Halberstam and Rabbi Moshe Shapira.

A7News: UTJ Negotiating Entry into Government Coalition
06.18.06 (12:51 pm)   [edit]
UTJ Negotiating Entry Into Government Coalition
The United Torah Judaism Knesset faction might be on its way into the government coalition, if negotiations with the Kadima party this week proceed as UTJ would like.
A leading issue on the table in negotiations between the Kadima-led coalition and UTJ is the latter's demands for increased state funding for child welfare and for hareidi-religious educational institutions.

Sources close to UTJ MK Yaakov Litzman told Arutz Sheva Radio that he is prepared for UTJ remain in the opposition, as his seat as chairman of the Knesset Finance Committee is guaranteed. The sources also said that Litzman has received support for his position from unnamed Hassidic rebbes and from other rabbinical figures.

In an interview with the hareidi publication HaMachaneh HaHareidi UTJ MK Meir Porush expressed optimism regarding the possibility of his party joining the government. In the same newspaper, a senior Kadima source is quoted as saying that the government needs UTJ in order to survive.

For this reason, some religious groups oppose the intention to have UTJ join the coalition. Rabbi Shalom Dov-Ber HaLevi Wolpe, of the world headquarters of SOS Israel, wrote to MK Porush asking him "at the last minute, to do all in your power so that United Torah Judaism not be a partner in this government." SOS Israel is a Chabad-affiliated organization dedicated to preserving the integrity Jewish control in the land of Israel.

Rabbi Wolpe wrote,
"If you continue to be a party to these negotiations and to this partnership, you will regret it very soon with all your heart; and I faithfully promise you, in my name and in the name of my colleagues, that the Chabad Chassidim will make sure that the regret is deep and internal. On the other hand, if you display spiritual strength and fight against entry into the government, then you will earn many more years to serve the people of Israel...."

The letter further said,
"Your entry into the coalition now has one and only one outcome: the continuation of Agudat Yisrael's partnership in the destruction and abandonment of the entire Land of Israel to the enemy's hands, the expulsion of thousands of families from their homes and bringing about life-threatening danger for millions of Jews."

A7News: Isreal Still on Defensive Over Beach Explosion
06.18.06 (12:50 pm)   [edit]
Israel Still on Defensive Over Beach Explosion
 By Hillel Fendel

The IDF denies today's London Times claim that Israel falsified findings in its investigation of the Gaza beach explosion of nine days ago that killed seven members of an Arab family.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz both said they have full confidence in the army's findings. The shrapnel removed from a wounded girl who was treated in an Israeli hospital shows without a doubt, the IDF says, that the explosion was not caused by an Israeli shell.

In addition, the IDF found that the beach showed no signs of a crater that would have been formed by a mortar shell. Furthermore, the beach showed no signs of unusual activity for at least seven minutes after the IDF stopped firing in the area.

Significantly, Israeli intelligence shows that Hamas had placed explosives and mines on the beach against Israeli naval commandos who might try to ambush terrorists using the beach to fire Kassam rockets. It was likely a Hamas-placed bomb of this type that killed the Arab family, the IDF concluded.

Amidst calls for an international investigation of the incident, Israel says it will agree to such a review "five minutes after the Kassam rocket firings by the terrorists in Gaza are investigated."

Six more Palestinian-fired Kassams rocketed Sderot and environs over the weekend.

The IDF spokesman said that the London Times "chose to quote partial information, yet presented it as a full investigation... We regret that such an important and sincere newspaper chose to publicize a distorted and incorrect headline, instead of sticking with the fact as presented to it in a telephone interview with the head of the investigative team, Gen. Meir Kalifi, in addition to the information presented at a press conference."

MK Zahava Gal-On (Meretz) called on the government to ask for an international investigation of the incident, saying Israel has "moral responsibility." MK Gilad Erdan (Likud) charged Gal-On with stabbing the military establishment in the back and "taking the side of enemies of the state. It is interesting that she never has demanded an investigation into the Kassam rocket attacks on Sderot and Ashkelon."

An IDF force arrested a wanted Islamic Jihad terrorist northwest of Jenin this morning. A Kalachnikov rifle was found in his house. The army force was fired upon, but no one was hurt.

A7News: Gov't Eases Way for Illegal Workers' Children to Citizenship
06.18.06 (12:49 pm)   [edit]
Gov't Eases Way for Illegal Workers' Children to Citizenship
 By Hillel Fendel

The Cabinet voted today that children of workers who are now in Israel illegally, and who fulfill certain conditions, will be able to become permanent residents - and so will their parents.

The four ministers of the Shas Party, as well as Foreign Minister Tzippy Livny - a former Immigration Minister - voted against the proposal. Eighteen ministers supported it.

Minister Eli Yishai, leader of the Shas Party and a Deputy Prime Minister, was sharply critical of the decision. "This is the end of the Jewish State," he said. "It's not a humanistic matter [as it has been portrayed], but rather an 'explosives vest' in terms of our image, economy, society and Jewishness. We are on a slippery slope leading to the loss of our identity." Yishai said, however, that Shas had stood "like a fortified wall" against the intention to make it even easier for foreign citizens to become Israelis.

MK Zevulun Hammer (National Religious Party) said, "This was a populist decision that will be 'weeping for generations.' The compromise proposal reached in the previous government [between the NRP and the anti-religious Shinui Party] balanced between ethical and humanistic values, on the one hand, and the need to deal with the problems of Israeli children and making sure not to turn the State of Israel into a state of all the world's citizens. The decision today exposes the State to the danger of citizenship for illegal Palestinian aliens."

Parents and Children
Children whose parents entered the country legally, who are over 14 years old, and who lived here at least six consecutive years will be eligible for permanent residency. In addition, their parents, even if they are now in the country illegally, will also be allowed to remain. So said Interior Minister Roni Bar-On to Voice of Israel Radio today. "It would not be humanitarian to separate between the children and their parents," Bar-On explained.

On the issue of continuing Kassam rockets at the Israeli city of Sderot, the government did not discuss or approve a military ground entry into Gaza to stop the Kassam rockets, as some experts have recommended. It did approve, however, the Defense Ministry plan to reinforce the communities adjacent to Gaza to Kassam attack. The roofs of schools and nurseries in Sderot will be first, and work will begin tomorrow.

A7News: Rockets Explode Early Morning Quiet in Sderot
06.18.06 (12:48 pm)   [edit]
Rockets Explode Early Morning Quiet in Sderot
 By Hillel Fendel

Six Kassam rockets over the weekend and early this morning continue to shake the equilibrium of Sderot residents. Week-long hunger strikers are still hoping for a government military response.

One Kassam rocket fired this morning by Hamas Authority terrorists in Gaza hit an electric pole in Sderot, knocking out electricity for an entire neighborhood for several hours.

Alon Davidi, one of the hunger-strikers, told Arutz-7, "One of our demands was for the IDF to knock out electricity in Gaza after every rocket attack. Apparently they're practicing on us first." Davidi's home is one of those without electricity. He and his fellow strikers are subsisting on water with sugar and vitamins.

The same rocket landed in a schoolyard, causing damage to the school building windows. Another rocket landed within five meters of a Kassam landing of ten days ago. "It's unbelievable," said one neighbor. "The same curtain that was sliced ten days ago in one spot, now has another gash in another spot. How are people supposed to live this way?"

The hunger-strikers are encamped outside the home of Sderot resident Defense Minister Amir Peretz. They demand a strong military response against the Gazan terrorists and infrastructures.

Several MKs and Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger visited them last week, but no prominent visitors have arrived yet today. A delegation of residents from Beit El is expected to visit this afternoon, to show solidarity with their struggle.

On Friday night, the Israel Air Force attacked a Kassam rocket launching cell in northern Gaza; two of the terrorists were reported killed, and one injured.

A7News: Outpost Heads: We're not Political Fodder to Camaflage Kassams
06.18.06 (12:47 pm)   [edit]
Outpost Heads: We're Not Political Fodder to Camouflage Kassams
 By Hillel Fendel

The ministerial Outposts Committee will convene today, meeting with representatives of Peace Now - which demand immediate destruction of all outposts - and the Yesha Council.

The Yesha Council leaders will meet tonight with Defense Minister Amir Peretz.

Peretz has declared that dozens of outposts throughout Yesha, of all sizes and legal statuses, are to be evacuated, removed or destroyed in the near future - possibly beginning two weeks from now .

"If he means to use us as political fodder to distract attention from the Kassams in Sderot," Yesha Council chief Bentzy Lieberman said today, "we won't allow this. But if he has a serious proposal [ to legalize some of them ], we will consider it."

Among the outposts slated for imminent removal are:
* The strategically critical Givat Assaf on the Beit El turnoff, with 14 families
* Givat HaRoeh near Eli, with 17 families
* Ramat Gilad, near Karnei Shomron
* Maaleh Rehavam in eastern Gush Etzion, and
* Mitzpeh Yitzhar - near Yitzhar, with three families and several bachelors. Structures there have been repeatedly demolished. It was most recently destroyed in May 2004, and has since been rebuilt.

There has been talk of a compromise in Givat Assaf, involving the replacement of the families with a military base. The residents say they will not accept such a deal.

Countering the Sasson Report
Lieberman and colleagues will meet with Peretz for the first time since Peretz became Defense Minister just over six weeks ago. In the knowledge that the government's operative strategy for the outposts is based on State Prosecutor Talia Sasson's hostile report of March 2005, they plan to present him with a different picture.

Sasson termed the construction of new communities in Yesha over the years "institutionalized law-breaking," and listed the ways in which the government "closed its eyes and enabled" the establishment of the new settlements. Among the methods used were allowing the construction of a small structure such as an antenna or a farm building, allocating caravans (mobile homes without wheels) and even land for the settlement outposts, then supplying electricity and water, and bringing in families. Various ministries and official bodies gave their own approval to each individual step, but the final approval was rarely given until much later, if at all.

The Yesha Council sees the situation very differently. Pinchas Wallerstein, head of the Binyamin Regional Council, said that in a random check he made, he found that on the average, new communities in Israel received their final approval 8-10 years after they were first established. "This is the regular policy in Israel," he said.

Many of the outposts are missing precisely one signature - that of the Defense Minister or the Civil Administration Head - for their legality to be finalized. The Yesha Council maintains that the signature is being withheld only for political reasons.

"We have prepared a detailed presentation," Lieberman told Arutz-7's Uzi Baruch, "based on a comprehensive study. In some of the outposts Sasson talks about, the government was a full partner in their establishment, while in others there was no deviation from the rules of the game that have always been in effect. It's [not fair] to change the rules in the middle of the game."

"If the authorities do not relate to what we have to say in a serious manner," Lieberman continued, "then we will have to think what our response on D-Day will be. But if they propose a compromise, we will present it to [former Chief Rabbi] Rabbi Avraham Shapira and senior Yesha rabbis for their consideration."

A7News: Manhigut Yehudit: PM Olmert is an Accessory to Murder
06.18.06 (12:46 pm)   [edit]
Manhigut Yehudit: PM Olmert is an Accessory to Murder
 By Nissan Ratzlav-Katz

The Manhigut Yehudit faction of the Likud released a statement calling anyone involved in last week's transfer of weapons to the Palestinian Authority an "accessory to murder."

Manhigut Yehudit (Jewish Leadership) "sees the prime minister, the defense minister, the justices of the High Court of Justice, and any officer and soldier involved in the transfer of weapons to the murderer Abu Mazen and his gang as accessories to the murder of Jews," the movement's statement said. Furthermore, Manhigut Yehudit, headed by Moshe Feiglin, declared that it would work towards trying the aforementioned before a court of law when the movement takes over the reigns of power.

The Israeli government, through the IDF, transferred 1,050 automatic rifles and one million bullets to the Palestinian Authority on Tuesday and Wednesday. The weapons reached the Allenby Crossing, on the Jordan-Israel border, as a gift to PA head Mahmoud Abbas from the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan. Other reports state that the guns are a gift of the United States. IDF forces then transported the weapons from the Jordanians across Israel and handed them over to PA forces at the Erez and Karni crossings into the Gaza Strip.

During his visit to Jordanian King Abdullah II earlier this month, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert approved the Jordanian request to transfer the weapons to the PA. The weapons transfer is apparently meant to prop up the militia controlled by Abbas; however, IDF sources report that the low-level war waged between Fatah and Hamas in the PA indicates that the weapons may not stay in the hands of Abbas-controlled gunmen.

A senior member of the terrorist Force 17 aligned with the Fatah movement told WorldNetDaily that the weapons earmarked for Abbas's personal guard will be used against Israel. Terrorist Abu Yousef told WND that the weapons - some of which, he claims, were delivered to the PA earlier than last week - have already have been used in two shooting attacks, one of which resulted in the death of an Arab whose car was mistaken for that of a Jew.

"These weapons will not be used in an internal war, but against Israelis," he said. "Force 17... will also be the first to lead the Palestinians in the current struggle against Israeli occupation."

On Thursday, the High Court of Justice turned down three petitions, one of which was filed by the Almagor terror victims association, asking it to ban the arms shipment to the PA. Prior to its final rendering in the matter, the court turned down an appeal to delay the transfer until it ruled on the petition.

The Hamas terrorist organization also released a statement demanding an explanation as to how the weapons and bullets made their way to Abbas and his men. In light of the violent clashes over power in the Palestinian Authority between Hamas and Abbas's Fatah organization, Hamas leaders are concerned that the weapons shipment changes the internal balance of power.

On Saturday, Abbas denied that he had received weapons from Israel to shore up his personal militia, but he admitted that general PA forces have been in need of weapons.

It is widely assumed that the public reports of Israel's transfer of weapons to Abbas in order to help him fight Hamas have not strengthened his image within the Palestinian Authority public.

Today's Lesson:

Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah
(Middle of Chapter Seven)
----------------------

Now, from the foregoing exposition one will be able to understand
the verse, (7) "I, Havayah, have not changed."

This means:

[Not only has there been no change in G-d's conduct, or even His will,
with regard to rewarding the righteous and so on, but this verse means
explicitly that there is no change, heaven forfend, in G-d: there
exists nothing that can alter Him.

The only consideration that might possibly cause one to wonder about
there being a change in G-d's unity is His bringing created beings
into existence. Before their creation nothing whatever existed other
than Him. After their creation, however, one might erroneously
conclude that there now exists something in addition to Him - the
various worlds and their denizens. And were this to be so, this would
constitute a change in G-d's absolute unity, heaven forbid.  The verse
therefore anticipates this by saying, "I, Havayah, have not changed."]

There is no change [in Him] at all; just as He was alone before the
creation of the world, so is He alone after it was created.

[Superficially this is difficult to understand. How can we possibly
say that G-d is alone after the world was created, when there now
exists an additional entity - the world?

However, according to the explanation given here regarding Divine
Unity, this matter is clearly understood. Since the world is truly
nullified in its entirety in relation to Him and is wholly united
with Him, G-d is thus just as truly alone after the world was created
as He was alone prior to its creation].

Accordingly it is written, (8) "You were [the same] before the world
was created; You are [the same after the world was created."

It would have been simpler to state, "You are the same before and
after the world was created."  The text, however, chose to be more
explicit in order to stress that the "You" that existed before the
world's creation remains exactly the same "You" after its creation],
without any change in His Being, nor even in His knowledge. (9)

[One might have supposed that with the creation of the world G-d's
knowledge underwent a change, (10) inasmuch as He could not have
possibly known the world beforehand; once the world was created,
G-d would thus know something that previously He did not. The Alter
Rebbe therefore tells us that G-d's knowledge has not changed at all].

For by knowing Himself, He knows all created things, since all derive
from Him and are nullified in relation to Him.

[Creation thus added nothing to G-d's knowledge. This knowledge of
self existed before creation, and it is with this prior knowledge that
He knows of all of creation].

As Maimonides, of blessed memory, stated, (11) that He is the Knower,
He is the Known, and He is Knowledge itself: all are one.

[This is radically different from mortal knowledge, which comprises
three distinct elements:
(a) the person's soul - the knower;
(b) the subject that is known; and
(c) the power of knowledge - the faculty of Daat, which enables the
knower to know the known.

In the Divine realm, however, these three elements are all one:
all are G-d. (See ch. 2 of Part I for further elaboration of this
theme].

This - [Maimonides goes on to say] - is beyond the capacity of the
mouth to express, beyond the capacity of the ear to hear, and beyond
the capacity of the heart [or mind] of man to apprehend clearly.

For the Holy One, blessed be He, His Essence and Being, and His
Knowledge - are all absolutely one, from every side and angle,
and in every form of unity.

His Knowledge is not superadded to His Essence and Being as it is in a
mortal soul, whose knowledge is added to its essence and is compounded
with it.

For when a man studies a subject and knows it, his rational soul was
already within him before he studied and knew it, and afterwards, this
knowledge was added to his soul.

[Man's knowledge is thus a supplement to his intrinsic being; through
it he becomes aware of something he did not know before].

And so, day after day, (12) "Days speak, [i.e., instruct a person],
and a multitude of years teach wisdom."

This is not a simple [i.e., perfect] unity, but a composite.

[The Alter Rebbe means the following:

Although man's knowledge, too, is united with him (lit., "with his
soul"), for it is the person himself who knows, nevertheless this is
not a perfect unity, for "simple" implies that any alternative would
be inconceivable. Since a man's knowledge is acquired, not having been
part of his essential being, its acquisition yields an imperfect and
composite form of unity, a unity comprised of two separate entities
that have coalesced].

The Holy One, blessed be He, however, is a perfect unity, without
any composition or element of plurality at all, [inasmuch as it is
impossible to speak of any aspect of Him as not having existed
previously].

Hence, [since His unity is perfect and uncompounded, one cannot say
that His Knowledge is something apart from Him, for that would imply,
heaven forbid, a composite - that his knowledge is superadded to His
Essence, effecting a change within Him.

Rather]:

One must conclude that His Essence and Being and Knowledge are all
absolutely one, without any composition.

Therefore, just as it is impossible for any creature in the world
to comprehend the Essence of the Creator and His Being, so it is
impossible to comprehend the essence of His knowledge, [which is
One with G-d Himself.

Inasmuch as faith transcends intellect, it is able to apprehend
truths that lie beyond the province of mortal intellect].

[It is possible] only to believe, with a faith that transcends
intellect and comprehension, that the Holy One, blessed be He, is
One and Unique.  He and His knowledge are all absolutely one, and
knowing Himself, He perceives and knows all the higher and lower
beings, [i.e., the beings in the higher and lower worlds], including
even a small worm in the sea (13) and a minute mosquito that may be
found in the center of the earth; (14) there is nothing concealed
from Him.

This knowledge does not add multiplicity and composition to Him at
all, since it is merely a knowledge of Himself; and His Being and His
knowledge are all one. (15)

[Thus, by knowing Himself, He knows all created beings that derive
their existence from Him and that are utterly nullified to Him and
unified with Him].

Inasmuch as this [form of knowledge] is very difficult to envisage,
the Prophet [Isaiah] therefore said, (16) "For as the heavens are
higher than the earth so are My ways higher than your ways, and My
thoughts than your thoughts."

It is likewise written, (17) "Can you by [intellectual] searching find
G-d?..."; and so too, (18) "Have You eyes of flesh, and do You see as
man sees?"

For man sees and knows everything with a knowledge that is external
to himself, [and hence something is added to him by his knowledge],
whereas the Holy One, blessed be He, [knows all] by knowing Himself.

These are the [paraphrased] words [of Maimonides].

(19) (See Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah. The Sages of the Kabbalah have
agreed with him, as is explained in Pardes of Rabbi Moshe Cordovero,
of blessed memory.)

[There are a number of Torah sages who sharply disagree with
Maimonides' view.

They claim that no descriptive term may be applied to G-d - not even
that of knowledge, and not even of a form of knowledge so rarefied
that it is completely beyond the realm of human experience.

To say that G-d is the "Knower" and the "Knowledge" and so on, so the
argument runs, is to give Infinite G-d a description which would serve
to limit Him.

According to the Kabbalah, however, Maimonides is indeed correct.

However (as stated in the Alter Rebbe's Note in Part I, ch. 2, and
later on in his Note in ch. 9), this is only after the Ein Sof-light
has undergone numerous tzimtzumim, until it is able to garb itself in
the vessels of the Sefirot of Chochmah, Binah and Daat of the World of
Atzilut.

At that stage, in Atzilut, we can truly say that G-d is the "Knower"
and "Known," etc., inasmuch as the attributes of Atzilut are
completely united with the Ein Sof-light. (20)

Footnotes:

7. Malachi 3:6.
8. Liturgy, Morning Prayer; Yalkut, Parshat Va-etchanan, Remez 835.
9. Note of the Rebbe: "Knowledge being merely a descriptive
term, just as (though keeping in mind a thousand and more
distinctions) man's knowledge is far inferior to the essence of
his soul - with regard to its simplicity (pshitut), being (atzmut),
   and so forth."
10. Note of the Rebbe: "Inasmuch as [knowledge] is only one
of His descriptive terms, which surely does not cause a change
    in His Essence."
11. Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah 2:10, et passim; Moreh Nevuchim I,
    chapter 68.
12. Iyov 32:7.
13. Note of the Rebbe: "[`The smallest of all creatures'-
Rashi on Chullin 40a] of the sea [according to the text of the
Tur and Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh Deah, Section 4]."
14. Note of the Rebbe: "The most insignificant of all
creatures; see Rambam, Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah 2:9; see also
Bereishit Rabbah, begining of chapter 8."
15. The following paraphrases a note of the Rebbe.
It would seem that the complete subject under discussion has now
been concluded. Since it is not within the province of Tanya to
expound Scriptural verses, why does the Alter Rebbe now proceed,
"The Prophet [Isaiah] therefore said ....," and so on?
One cannot compare this passage with chapter 2, where the verses
cited contribute to the explanation of the matter at hand, namely,
the limits of man's comprehension. Here, however, since these
verses appear to add nothing, why does the Alter Rebbe quote and
    explain them?
A solution: By doing so, the Alter Rebbe answers a question which
seems to contradict all that has been stated earlier. For the
Alter Rebbe had written earlier that a perception of Maimonides'
concept that "He is the Knowledge .....," is the "lower-level
Unity" which is applicable to every man (as opposed to the
"higher-level Unity" which can be achieved only by select
individuals who have attained a singularly exalted spiritual
    state).
However, Maimonides' concluding words on this subject in this
very text seem to indicate otherwise, namely, "This is beyond the
capacity ..... of the heart of man to apprehend clearly": no man,
even the most spiritual, is able to comprehend this matter.
This question becomes even more acute in the light of that which
Maimonides writes in Hilchot Teshuvah, end of chapter 5: "This is
    what the prophet states, `My thoughts are not your thoughts'...";
i.e., this statement is even made by the Prophets. This seems to
contradict the Alter Rebbe's earlier statement that "lower-level
Unity" may be achieved by all.
For this reason the Alter Rebbe says: "The prophet [Isaiah]
therefore says...," since this matter is indeed difficult to
envisage intellectually. Nevertheless, this manner of spiritual
service is indeed within the reach of all, even of those who are
only at the level of "lower-level Unity."
16. Yeshayahu 55:9.
17. Iyov 11:17.
18. Ibid. 10:4.
19. Parentheses are in the original text.
20. Note of the Rebbe: "All this is explained at length -
the opinion of Maimonides, those who disagree with him, and
the Alter Rebbe's explanation of this matter - in Sefer HaMitzvot
[i.e., Derech Mitzvotecha] of the Tzemach Tzedek, Mitzvat Haamanat
    Elokut."

Today's Mitzvah (Day 289 of 339):

Positive Mitzvah 200; Negative Mitzvah 238
------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------

Positive Mitzvah 200: Paying Wages on Time

-Deuteronomy 24:15 "Give him his wage on the day it is due"

When you baby-sit or mow the lawn for someone, you appreciate getting paid for your time and effort. Even if you do not receive your payment upon completing the job, you feel confident that you will get paid at some later time. Nonetheless, you're much happier when you are paid immediately after you finish the work.

The Torah warns us to be careful when paying people who work for us. We are commanded to pay them on time and not withhold their wages.

------------------------- ------------------------- --------------------

Negative Mitzvah 238 It is forbidden to delay payment to a hired
    & nbsp;   &n bsp;   &nb sp;   &nbs p;    worker

-Leviticus 19:13 "The wages of a hired worker shall not be left
& nbsp;   &n bsp;   &nb sp;   &nbs p; with you overnight until the morning"

Manny's father works in a firm and gets a monthly salary.

Ricky's mother is a teacher and receives her check every two weeks.

Bassi's father is a self-employed painter and charges by the hour.

No one would think of paying him a month later for his day's work.

The Torah cautions us not to delay payment that is owed to a hired worker.

If he worked during the day, we must pay him by the next morning. If he is employed on a night job, he must be paid by the end of the next day.

The Choice
----------

Ultimately, Darkness will meet its end. Our choice lies only in the form of its demise. If we meet nothing but success in every stage of our mission, Darkness will helplessly surrender. When we fail, however, we have taken upon ourselves to wrestle it face-to-face to its utter destruction.

Sivan 22

Rav Sala said, "Every arrogant person will eventually sin ..." Rav Nachman said, "It is evident that an arrogant person is one who has already sinned" (Taanis 7b).

Rav Sala states that arrogance causes wrongdoing, and Rav Nachman asserts that wrongdoing causes arrogance. As with so many other differences of opinion among Talmudic authors, both positions are valid.

Rav Sala is pointing to a common phenomenon. Arrogance is an attitude of self-righteousness. Arrogant people discount opinions of others and consider themselves superior to everyone. They may go so far as to consider themselves above the law; rules that apply to others simply do not apply to them, only to those of lesser stature. Obviously, such an attitude makes breaking the law an available option, because to arrogant people, their actions cannot be wrong.

Rav Nachman states that arrogance is a defensive maneuver employed after the act in an effort to relieve the sense of guilt. Tormented by the guilt of having done something wrong, people may assume an attitude of defiance and deny that what they did was wrong. Since authority and/or prevailing opinion hold that the act was indeed wrong, they defend themselves by both dismissing those who hold that opinion as know-nothings and setting themselves up as superior in wis dom.

Arrogance and sin thus do have a cause-effect relationship, which can go either way.

Today I shall ...
... be alert to any attitude or behavior of arrogance on my part.

Daily Lift #986 - Be Honorable by Treating Others with Respect

Daily Lift #986

Be Honorable By Treating Others With Respect

The Sages in Pirkei Avos (4:1) define the honorable person as “someone who shows honor and respect to other people.” They are teaching us that it’s not how other people treat you that makes you important and honorable. Rather, it’s how you treat others.

When you realize that every human being is created in the image of the Almighty, you realize that right from birth every human being is important and valuable. By being respectful to other human beings, you add to your self-respect. You recognize that when you treat others with respect, you are expressing respect to the Creator.

(From Rabbi Zelig Pliskin’s new book: “Building Your Self- image and the Self-image of Others” (Artscroll) Chapter 2)

Mom with a View - Leave It to Mrs. Cleaver - Eating together as a Family Is NOT a Luxury.
06.12.06 (6:29 pm)   [edit]
Eating together as a family is not a luxury.

Eating dinner as a family was on its way to becoming a cultural dinosaur, thanks in no small part to all those images of Leave it to Beaver with June Cleaver in her frilly apron and pearls.

That is -- until a recent study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. They found that the more often a family eats dinner together, the less likely the kids are to get involved with alcohol and drug abuse.

Although they didn't detail appropriate dinnertime behavior, one assumes that while it is not necessary that the dinner be homemade, there would have to be some communication among family members in order for this to be an effective strategy. That would probably entail turning off the TV (not just turning down the sound), turning off cell phones (and Blackberries and Treos) and maybe (although this may be too revolutionary) not answering the regular phone -- if you still have one.

What's stunning is that for many, this is a radical idea. In escaping the stultifying fifties, we've run so fast and hard that we didn't stop to see if there was anything worth preserving. We may not want to see our own face in the dishes, but it might be nice to see those of our other family members!

Dinner time is a good opportunity to catch up on everyone's lives, to sift through community news, to discuss the interesting issues of the day. If the topic becomes too esoteric, we like to borrow a line from the father in the biography Cheaper by the Dozen, "That is not of general interest." Or if one child is particularly long-winded, we like to borrow from Pride and Prejudice, "You have delighted us long enough."

But in general, it's a free-for-all with topics up for grabs and usually at least two children who get caught up in the discussion (and another two who talk about something else just to make trouble!).

While we rarely have take out (due to budgetary considerations and not the ghost of June Cleaver), I refuse to be a short-order cook. There is one dinner made -- and a last resort option of cereal and milk. This allows me to sit at the table and participate in the conversation -- or not.

Sometimes due to job considerations or other scheduling complications, it is not possible for families to eat together. Some times there's no choice. And sometimes it's a matter of priorities. Which will benefit our child more: another after-school activity or a relaxed dinner with his family?

The statistics from CASA are hard to argue with. You may not want to get dressed up with pearls for dinner and greet your husband and kids with that big smile (why not give it a shot?), but maybe June Cleaver was really onto something important.

Refusing to play the role of victim.
Dear Rebbetzin,

What methods can you advise about repairing the self esteem of someone who has been damaged in this respect during his youth? Getting angry too quickly, feeling too shy in public and blaming others (particularly parents) for all that went wrong are the most obvious mental 'faults'. Although I have built a very successful business, my mind still keeps me busy with negative settings.

Thanks.

Rebbetzin Feige responds:

Dear reader,

All of our life's experience, the way we see ourselves and the way we see others, is a product of our own thinking. If we choose to change our mind, the way life presents itself is altered commensurately. It is like looking through a kaleidoscope where, with a slight adjustment in position, we get a totally different picture.

That shift is for us to make. It consists of letting go of previous thoughts that keep us locked and confined in a place where we see ourselves as victims of that which has been brought to bear upon us by others, i.e. parents who are inadequate in the formative years of our upbringing, teachers, friends, etc. -- the myriad of external forces and circumstances that we are convinced shape the person that we are today. We can relinquish the control that others have on us by recognizing that the power resides within us exclusively. It is a totally liberating experience.

The only real variable to psychological well being, that is, to be in a positive relationship with ourselves and others, is our own personal thinking. Consider the fact that all of us have better days and worse days, times when life feels heavy and oppressive and alternatively periods when we are in good cheer. What changes? For the most part, the disparity in feeling and mood can be traced to nothing more than a state of mind -- our thoughts -- a shift in the kaleidoscope.

The 92-Year-Old Water Carrier

My father, of blessed memory, was fond of interpreting the verse in our morning prayers that thanks God for "renewing the acts of creation daily" in the following way. He drew on an encounter in the life of the saintly Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov, the founder of the Chassidic movement, with a water carrier. The Rebbe was standing by the window overlooking the courtyard one morning. He observed Chaim, the 92-year-old water carrier positioning his two pails of water on his shoulder for delivery up the steep hill in front of him.

The Rebbe opened the window and called out to Chaim in greeting and inquired how he was doing. In a despondent tone of voice, Chaim responded by saying that if at 92 years of age he was still obliged to carry heavy pails of water up the hill, life left much to be desired. The Rebbe took leave of him and wished him well.

The very next day, at the same time, the scenario repeated itself -- the Rebbe at the window, Chaim the 92-year-old water carrier, his two pails perched on his shoulder and the steep hill beckoning. The Rebbe, once again, inquired about his well being. This time, a big smile spread across Chaim's age worn face as he replied, "Nu, Rebbe, if at 92 years of age I can still manage to shlep and deliver these heavy pails up the hill, do I have a right to complain?"

Identical circumstances, but a different way of thinking. The way he experienced life was transformed from one of seeing himself as victimized by circumstances to one of being privileged to be alive. This, my father concluded, is the meaning of the gratitude that we express to God daily for giving us the wherewithal, by virtue of our thinking, to "renew the acts of creation daily."

Resisting and dropping negative and contaminating thinking is not easy, especially when it has become a pattern, a way of being. Old habits die hard, the saying goes. However, we do have the power, if we are determined, to recreate our perception of ourselves and our lives.

At the Gas Station

My daughter, Baila called me recently to share the following occurrence. Her daughter, Chana Malka, my granddaughter, was driving along the Garden State Parkway from New Jersey to New York. She stopped at a gas station and the attendant who came to service her car was a dwarf. As he washed the windows of the car, he suddenly became excited and pointed to the portrait of Chana Malka's father, Rabbi Eliezer Geldzahler, of blessed memory, positioned in the passenger seat of the car.

"How do you know that man?" he asked in a state of agitation. "I've been looking for him for more than two years. Where is he? And how do you know him?"

Chana Malka gently informed him that the man in the portrait was her father and that he died, the casualty of a bus accident in Israel from which he never recovered. As the dwarf's eyes filled with tears, my granddaughter inquired how it was that he knew her father.

He said, "Everyone who meets me, the dwarf, averts their eyes in discomfort at my disability. Your father was the only one who looked me straight in the eye and said, ‘Young man, you are an inspiration. You were born with what to others would appear as a great handicap, but you refuse to play the role of the victim. You get up in the morning, go to work, and earn an honest living. You are a role model for all of us. You teach us that circumstances should not dictate the terms of our existence. What's more, I am going back to my students and I'm going to tell them about you so that they might learn from your example.' Your father made me feel tall, if not in size, then in stature. I used to so look forward to seeing him and I've missed him so much. My condolences to you. He was a truly great man."

There are people who are privileged with good fortune and are tall in size but by indulging contaminated thinking, become virtual dwarfs in their own eyes. And there are those who work hard to deliberately move away from the clutches of thoughts that would drag them down -- memories of the past (which are no more than a collection of thoughts) and personal thinking of their flaws and blemishes which limit their experience of living.

My dear reader, we are the thinkers. The choice is ours. We determine what colors to lend to the images that appear on the canvas of our daily lives.

Do yourself a favor: When the negative, inhibiting thoughts surface in your mind, as they inevitably will, imagine that you are at a depot with a choice of many buses going to different destinations. Before you climb on one of them, it would be wise for you to ask yourself if this bus will take you where you want to go. If it won't, don't get on that bus. Move on; find the right bus, the thoughts and mindset that will allow you to embrace life and all of your potential and blessings. Slowly and surely you will more consistently identify the right bus, create a new pattern for yourself, a shift in your kaleidoscope that will give you a new lease on life.

Sivan 15

Fortunate is the person who has the God of Jacob as his help; his hope is in his God (Psalms 146:5).

We may see ourselves as dependent for survival on those means that we employ to earn our livelihood. We often tend to forget that our true dependence is on God. Consequently, if anything should occur that appears to jeopardize our means of earning a living, we may panic. A firm trust in God would allow us to approach such situations with constructive rational thought rather than with panic, which is likely to be destructive.

Rabbi Schneur Zalman once lodged at an inn and asked the innkeeper where he could find a minyan (quorum of ten) for morning services. The innkeeper explained that he was the only Jew in this tiny hamlet. "Then how do you pray all year round without a minyan?" the rabbi asked.

"What can I do?" the innkeeper said. "This is my parnasah (livelihood)."

"Do you think that God has provided a parnasah for all the Jews in the city, but has none for you?" the rabbi asked. The following morning, Rabbi Schneur Zalman awoke to find that the innkeeper had packed all his belongings on wagons. Upon inquiring, he was told that the innkeeper was moving to the city. Rabbi Schneur Zalman would always relate this story as an example of the unwavering trust in God which simple folk were able to achieve.

A group of blind men asked a sighted person to lead them. Each put his hand on the shoulder of the one in front of him. They all knew that although they were being immediately led by the man in front of them, the ultimate leader of the entire procession, who made their safe progress possible, was the sighted person on whom all were ultimately dependent.

The things we work with and the people with whom we transact are but the means or the vehicles with which the Ultimate Provider tends to our needs.

Today I shall ...
... remember that my Ultimate Provider is God, Who has limitless ways to provide for my needs.

Three Stages Of Enlightenment
------------------------- ----

There are three ways of life on the ladder of enlightenment:

One is life upon a wild beast. But the inner self is awake, and that innerness is joined by a great light from Above, so that eyes stay on the road, mind, words and limbs working together to reach their destination. There are many levels to this rung, but all are within the reach of every person.

Then there is a person in whom burns a holy fire of desire for the Oneness of the Infinite Light. With this fire, he overwhelms the fire of earthly passion, until it is diminished to no more than a faint flicker. This again knows many levels, but all within the realm of the tzaddik -- something not every person can reach in a single lifetime.

There is also an ultimate point: Where the fire of earthly passion becomes itself a G-dly force. Then there will not be any more darkness, for we will have revealed how all darkness shines. This is the stage of a time to come, but it will sprout from the seeds of our struggle with darkness in the here and now.

Daily Lift # 981 - You Are Unique
06.11.06 (4:30 pm)   [edit]

Daily Lift #981

You Are Unique

You are unique. You are the only person in the world who is exactly who you are. The Almighty has not made anyone else like you. Only you have your unique genetic makeup and your unique life circumstances. No one alive now, and no one who ever lived before, and no one who will ever live in the future was, is, or will be just like you. You are the only person in the world with your unique positive qualities and challenges. You are the only person in the world who has your particular life mission.

You, like everyone else alive right now, are a work in progress. You have a multitude of positive choices you can make throughout each and every day. Choose life! Choose positive thoughts, words, and actions. With every positive choice you make, you build yourself. Keep making positive choices.

If not now, when?

- Ethics of our Fathers, 1:14

    & nbsp;   &n bsp;   &nb sp;   &nbs p;     ;    *        *        *

"Our world is a banquet," proclaims the Talmud. "Grab and eat, grab and drink."

Those who arrived during the early hours of the banquet, went about the business of feasting and dinning in a most professional and methodical manner. First, they sampled the appetizers just enough, mind you, to properly whet their appetites. Then, they proceeded up the ladder of courses and wines, carefully negotiating their way to gastronomic satisfaction par excellence.

But what of the group who arrived a few scant minutes before midnight, the hour when the tables were cleared, the chairs stacked and the doors bolted shut? For them to attempt to follow the course outlined by the intricate rules of dinner etiquette would only guarantee that the doors would will slam on their empty stomachs. "Just grab!" we tell them. Grab meat, salads, soup, wine and fish never mind the order and proportion. It's a race against the clock: Grab and eat, grab and drink....

In earlier generations, there was a well-defined "Standard Operating Procedure" for those who consulted the Torah's spiritual menu for the banquet of life. No one, for example, would have ventured to sample the esoteric wine of creation's secrets before filling his belly with the "meat and potatoes" of Talmud and halacha. No one would have been so presumptuous as to believe that he could refine his nature and character before he had perfected his behavior and made his every act, word and thought to utterly conform to Torah's directives.

All this, however, was a luxury of generations bygone. Today, we are rapidly approaching the climax of history, the day when Moshiach will herald a new era of goodness and perfection, yet will also bring down the curtain on the struggles and attainments that stem of our currently imperfect state. So grab! Grab another mitzvah, master another, yet deeper, facet of Torah. Never mind the "Standard Operating Procedure" - strive for the ultimate, now.

Introductory reading to Ethics of the Fathers:

All Israel has a share in the World to Come, as is stated: ``And your people are all righteous; they shall inherit the land forever. They are the shoot of My planting, the work of My hands, in which I take pride.'' (Sanhedrin, 11:1)

Chapter One

1. Moses received the Torah from [G-d at] Sinai and gave it over to Joshua. Joshua gave it over to the Elders, the Elders to the Prophets, and the Prophets gave it over to the Men of the Great Assembly. They [the Men of the Great Assembly] would always say these three things: Be cautious in judgment. Establish many pupils. And make a safety fence around the Torah.

2. Shimon the Righteous was among the last surviving members of the Great assembly. He would say: The world stands on three things: Torah, the service of G-d, and deeds of kindness.

3. Antignos of Socho received the tradition from Shimon the Righteous. He would say: Do not be as slaves, who serve their master for the sake of reward. Rather, be as slaves who serve their master not for the sake of reward. And the fear of Heaven should be upon you.

4. Yossei the son of Yoezer of Tzreidah, and Yossei the son of Yochanan of Jerusalem, received the tradition from them. Yossei the son of Yoezer of Tzreidah would say: Let your home be a meeting place for the sages; dust yourself in the soil of their feet, and drink thirstily of their words.

5. Yossei the son of Yochanan of Jerusalem would say: Let your home be wide open, and let the poor be members of your household. And do not engage in excessive conversation with a woman. This is said even regarding one's own wife---how much more so regarding the wife of another. Hence, the sages said: One who excessively converses with a woman causes evil to himself, neglects the study of Torah, and, in the end, inherits purgatory.

6. Joshua the son of Perachia and Nitai the Arbelite received from them. Joshua the son of Perachia would say: Assume for yourself a master, acquire for yourself a friend, and judge every man to the side of merit.

7. Nitai the Arbelite would say: Distance yourself from a bad neighbor, do not cleave to a wicked person, and do not abandon belief in retribution.

8. Judah the son of Tabbai and Shimon the son of Shotach received from them. Judah the son of Tabbai would say: When sitting in judgement, do not act as a counselor-at-law. When the litigants stand before you, consider them both guilty; and when they leave your courtroom, having accepted the judgement, regard them as equally righteous.

9. Shimon the son of Shotach would say: Increasingly cross-examine the witnesses. Be careful with your words, lest they learn from them how to lie.

10. Shmaayah and Avtalyon received from them. Shmaayah would say: Love work, loath mastery, and avoid intimacy with the government.

11. Avtalyon would say: Scholars, be careful with your words. For you may be exiled to a place inhabited by evil elements [who will distort your words to suit their negative purposes]. The disciples who come after you will then drink of these evil waters and be destroyed, and the Name of Heaven will be desecrated.

12. Hillel and Shammai received from them. Hillel would say: Be of the disciples of Aaron---a lover of peace, a pursuer of peace, one who loves the creatures and draws them close to Torah.

13. He would also say: One who advances his name, destroys his name. One who does not increase, diminishes. One who does not learn is deserving of death. And one who make personal use of the crown of Torah shall perish.

14. He would also say: If I am not for myself, who is for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?

15. Shammai would say: Make your Torah study a permanent fixture of your life. Say little and do much. And receive every man with a pleasant countenance.

16. Rabban Gamliel would say: Assume for yourself a master; stay away from doubt; and do not accustom yourself to tithe by estimation.

17. His son, Shimon, would say: All my life I have been raised among the wise, and I have found nothing better for the body than silence. The essential thing is not study, but deed. And one who speaks excessively brings on sin.

18. Rabbi Shimon the son of Gamliel would say: On three things the would endures: law, truth and peace. As is stated, ``Truth, and a judgement of peace, you should administer at your [city] gates.''

Studied at the conclusion of each lesson of the Ethics:

Rabbi Chananiah the son of Akashiah would say: G-d desired to merit the people of Israel; therefore, He gave them Torah and mitzvot in abundance. As is stated, ``G-d desired, for sake of his righteousness, that Torah be magnified and made glorious.'' (Makot, 3:16)

In this week's Torah portion, God said to Moses to:

"Command the children of Israel that they shall expel from the camp everyone with tzara'as..." (Numbers 5:1)

A LIFE LESSON

God instructed all the Jews that if someone has tzara'as - which is defined as leprosy or skin contamination - then he needs to temporarily live away from everyone else.

In order to understand why this was done, it's first important to know exactly what caused someone to be afflicted with tzara'as. This skin aliment appeared on those people who gossiped about someone else. When the Jews lived in Israel during the times we had the Holy Temple, when someone slandered another person, he could be afflicted with this aliment.

Perhaps the reason he needed to be segregated from everyone else comes down to this: Human beings really don't like taking responsibility for their errant actions. Let me explain. No one wants to be thought of as a bad person or one who wrongs others. So in an effort to avoid this, most people simply choose to rationalize their behavior to demonstrate that they were completely justified in what they did. Our reasoning tends to boil down to this: Yes I did it, but it's definitely not what it seems.

Maybe this is why God wants the person not to live amongst other Jews until his tzara'as goes away. It was done to prevent this person from committing additional sins by repeating his gossip in an effort to show why it wasn't really gossip in the first place.

And this is the lesson for all of us. We all have the temptation at times to try to explain away our errant behavior. The next time you do something to someone else that you really shouldn't have done, try to resist the urge to make everyone believe that you really didn't do anything wrong. Instead, take personal responsibility for what you did. This will not only make you feel great, but will also act as a powerful shield against compounding your initial mistake.

Today's Lesson:

Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah
Chapter Three
----------------------

[The Alter Rebbe has explained that the activating force of the
Creator must constantly be vested within creation, ceaselessly
recreating and reanimating created beings ex nihilo.

This force consists of the creative "letters" which emanate from the
five supernal organs of verbal articulation].

Now, following these words of truth [concerning the nature of
creation, namely, that the activating force must continually be
vested in created beings and create them ex nihilo], every discerning
person will understand clearly that every creature and being, [even
though it appears to have an existence of its own], is in reality
considered to be absolute naught and nothingness in relation to the
activating force [which creates it] and the "breath of His mouth"
which is within it, continuously calling it into existence and
bringing it from absolute non-being into being.

[Since this function must be continuous, it follows that the
creature's activating force is the true reality of its existence;
the being itself bears no comparison to the activating force which
is wholly responsible for its existence].

The reason that all things created and activated appear to us as
existing [i.e., self-subsisting and tangible, and we fail to see the
Divine activating source which is the true reality of any created
being], is that we do not comprehend nor see with our physical eyes
the power of G-d and the "breath of His mouth" which is in the created
thing.

If, however, the eye were permitted to see and to comprehend the life-
force and spirituality which is in every created thing, flowing into
it from "that which proceeds from the mouth of G-d" (1) and "His
breath," then the physicality, materiality and tangibility of the
creature would not be seen by our eyes at all, for it [this
physicality, etc.] is completely nullified in relation to the life-
force and the spirituality which is within it since without the
spirituality [within it] it would be naught and absolute nothingness,
exactly as before the Six Days of Creation, [at which time the
creature was utterly non-existent].

The spirituality that flows into it from "that which proceeds from
the mouth of G-d" and "His breath," - that alone continuously brings
it forth from naught and nullity into being, and [this spirituality]
gives it existence.

Hence, there is truly nothing besides Him [in any created being,
apart from the Divinity - the only true reality - that brings it
into existence.

The created being does not constitute a true reality, inasmuch as it
is wholly dependent for its existence on the continuous flow of Divine
life-force. Indeed, its existence verily consists of that activating
force.

Today is: Thursday, Sivan 5, 5766
Omer: Day 49 - Malchut sheb'Malchut

======================
Today's Laws & Customs
======================

. All-Night Learning

The Talmud relates that when G-d came to give the Torah to the People of Israel in the early morning of Sivan 6 (see "Today in Jewish History [http://www.chabad.org/282243]" for tomorrow), He found them sleeping. (the Chassidic masters explain that this was an attempt to connect to their subconscious, transcendent self in preparation for their reception of the divine wisdom). To rectify this lapse, we spend the entire first night of Shavuot (which begins at nightfall tonight) studying Torah. The traditional Tikkun Leil Shavout ("Rectification for Shavuot Night") study program includes the opening and closing verses of each book of the Written Torah (Tanach), the entire Book of Ruth (see "Laws and Customs [http://www.chabad.org/282270]" for tomorrow), the opening and closing sections of each tractate of the Talmud, a list of the 613 mitzvot, and selected readings from the Zohar and other Kabbalistic works.

=======================
Today in Jewish History
=======================

. Reuben Finds Mandrakes (1568 BCE)

The incident involving the mandrakes (dudaim) which Reuben, the eldest son of Jacon, found in the field "during the time of the wheat harvest"--recounted in Genesis 30:14-18 [http://www.chabad.org/8225]-- occurred on the fifth of Sivan of the year 2197 from creation (1568 BCE).

. Jews Accept Torah (1313 BCE)

On this day, Moses made a covenant with the Jewish people at the foot of Mount Sinai at which the people declared, "All that G-d has spoken, we shall do and hear" (Exodus 24:7) commiting themselves to observe the Torah's commandments ("do") and strive to comprehend them ("hear"), while pledging to "do" also before they "hear."

. Rabbis Burnt at Stake (1728)

On this day Rabbis Chayim and Yehoshua Reitzes were tortured and burned in Lvov, Poland after they were accused of having attempted to convince an apostate to return to Judaism.

Wherever you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your G-d, my G-d. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried

Tuesday, Sivan 5, Erev Shavuot 5703 * 49th day of the Omer

Torah lessons: Chumash: Nasso, Shlishi with Rashi.
    & nbsp;   &n bsp;   &nb sp;  Tehillim: 29-34.
& nbsp;   &n bsp;   &nb sp;  Tanya: And this is (p. 279)...BLESSED AND EXALTED.
    & nbsp;   &n bsp;   &nb sp;   &nbs p;     ; (p. 281).

On the eve of Shavuot 5557 (1797) the Alter Rebbe taught:

"Sanctify them today and tomorrow and they shall cleanse
    their garments. (1)

"Sanctify them today and tomorrow," is done from Above, but
"they shall cleanse their garments" - one must do himself."

This was the entire teaching.

The Tzemach Tzedek elaborated:

"Sanctify them" was said by G-d to Moshe. The extension of Moshe
is in every generation (2) and they (3) are able to sanctify the
"today" and the "tomorrow"; but for this is needed "..and they
shall cleanse their garments" - the garments of thought, speech
and deed.  This must be done by each person on his own.

Footnotes: 1. Sh'mot 19:10.
    & nbsp;   &n bsp;  2. Tikunei Zohar, Tikun 69.
& nbsp;   &n bsp;  3. I.e. the Moshe in each generation.

Negative Mitzvah 252: It is forbidden to hurt a convert's feelings

-Exodus 22:20 "You shall not wrong a stranger"

A "Ger" is a person who converted to Judaism and took upon him-or herself to keep the Torah and Mitzvot.

We are commanded not to hurt his feelings or say anything that may cause the Ger to be embarrassed or feel uneasy.

Today's Mitzvah (Day 273 of 339):

Positive Mitzvah 245
------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------

Positive Mitzvah 245: Conducting Business

-Leviticus 25:14 "And if you sell something to your neighbor, or buy
    & nbsp;   &n bsp;   &nb sp;   &nbs p; something from your neighbor"

The Torah deals with every aspect of our lives; not only with the way we pray and study, but also the manner in which we carry out our business.

This Positive Mitzvah establishes guidelines for our business dealings and governs the way we buy, sell, and transfer ownership of property.

These guidelines include writing business contracts, paying for goods with money, or exchanging one item for another.

Today's Lesson:

Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah
Chinuch Katan
--------------------

Now, those who are familiar with the esoteric meaning of Scripture
know the meaning of the verse, (34) "For a tzaddik may fall seven
times, and yet rises again."

[Even a tzaddik can (as it were) fall from his level and then regain
his stature. There thus exists a certain interval of time during which
he does not maintain his higher level of love for G-d].

Especially so, [since the conditions of spiritual service dictate
that at given times he will not maintain his level], for man is called
"mobile" and not "static."

[This phrase not only means that man is obliged to be ever reaching
for ever greater heights; it means, moreover, that his newly-attained
level is infinitely more elevated than his previous level.

When one is constantly on the same level, or even when one advances
in finite stages from one comparable level to the next, there is no
need to abandon one's former level before establishing one's foothold
on the next; on the contrary, one's former position may well help one
to take the next step upward.

When one is truly mobile, however, climbing from one level to an
infinitely higher one, his previous level - which is finite compared
to the level he is about to attain - actually hinders his progress.

Indeed, if he aspires to mature to a more exalted spiritual mindset,
he must first purge himself of his previous one]. (35)

[As the Alter Rebbe said, man is called "mobile" and not "static"]
and must therefore advance from one level to another infinitely higher
level, and not remain forever at one level.

[For if his new level is merely within range of the first, he is
essentially fixated at the same level].

Between one level and the next, before he can reach the higher one,
he is in a state of decline from his previous level, [and thus he
lacks the superior level of love in which he is accustomed to
delight].

Yet, it is written, (36) "Though he falls, he shall not be utterly
cast down" [from his spiritual service and from his love for G-d].

This is considered a decline only relative to his former state,
and not [G-d forbid] relative to all other men; [he is most assuredly
loftier than those who have not attained the level of tzaddik], for
[notwithstanding his fall] he still surpasses them in his divine
service, inasmuch as it retains an impression of his former level.

For the mainstay of his service [while he is in this fallen state]
is the love of G-d in which he had been educated and trained from
his youth, before he attained the level of tzaddik, [with its higher
reaches in the love of G-d.

Just as then his love of G-d was born of contemplation, so too
now, this lower level of love is the root of his divine service].

This, then, is what is meant by saying that "even as he grows old
[he will not depart from it," from the path of his youth.

Not "when he is old" but "as he grows old." This implies an ongoing,
lifelong climb from level to level. Yet even when he has risen to the
dizziest heights of love for G-d, he will yet have occasion to revert
to the path of his youth - to the lower, more measured level of love
that is born of meditation].

First among the factors that arouse love and fear, and their
foundation, is a pure and faithful belief in the Unity and Oneness
of G-d, may He be blessed and exalted.

["Oneness" here means that all of creation is united with G-d and
utterly nullified to Him.

That is to say, pure faith in G-d's Unity is the starting-point
and foundation of one's meditation on yichuda ila'ah ("higher-level
Unity") and yichuda tata'ah ("lower-level Unity"), and this meditation
in turn leads to the love and fear of Him.

There are truths that transcend intellect and that can be perceived
only through faith.

At the same time, utilizing faith for something that can be
comprehended is making use of the wrong faculty: intellect must
grasp that which is within the reach of intellect, and faith must be
used to apprehend that which transcends intellect.

When within belief there is a mingling of the rational and the
superrational - when truths that are accessible to comprehension are
confused with things that defy comprehension - such belief is not
"pure", for pure belief deals only with that which transcends
rationality.

It is only when one utilizes his intellect to comprehend all that
is subject to comprehension and his power of faith is then utilized
solely for that which defies intellect, that such faith can then be
deemed "pure faith."

Since both categories are represented in the subject of G-d's Unity
and Oneness, it becomes necessary to explain those aspects of the
subject that are capable of being comprehended so that one's faith
will be "pure" - relating only to those matters that entirely
transcend comprehension.

34. Mishlei 24:16.
35. Note of the Rebbe: "Similar to R. Zeira, who fasted in
order to forget the Babylonian Talmud [as a prerequisite to his
attaining mastery of the spiritually more elevated Jerusalem
    Talmud]" (cf. Bava Metzia 85a).
36. Tehillim 37:24.
