A7 News: Rabbi Ariel Arrested, Released
12.07.06 (12:17 pm)   [edit]
Rabbi Ariel Arrested, Released By Hillel Fendel Rabbi Yisrael Ariel [left], Jerusalem Temple Institute founder, was arrested for several hours today because of a letter he wrote recommending that an IDF officer not be called up to the Torah. Rabbi Ariel is a member of the seven-man leadership council of the recently-formed "Sanhedrin" in Jerusalem. Today's arrest is connected with the administrative orders forbidding some 20 men of Judea and Samaria from living in their homes for between three and twelve months. Signed on the original orders was an IDF Prosecution officer who lives in one of the Binyamin area communities. [pictured above in 1967 Six-Day War photo, from left to right: Rabbi Ariel, the Nazir Rabbi David Cohen, Rabbi Tzvi Yehuda Kook.] The Sanhedrin Rabbinical Court summoned the officer to appear before the court for a Din Torah - a Torah trial - to explain why he issued the orders seemingly in contrast to Torah law. The officer repeatedly refused to show up, and the Court considered taking the measures usually taken in such cases: placing the subject in herem, or excommunicating him. However, in the event, the Court, of which Rabbi Ariel is a leading member, merely sent a letter to the IDF officer's community's secretariat recommending that he not be called up to the Torah until he complies with the Court's order. Rabbi Ariel then underwent a similar experience. The police called him two or three times, informing him that he must show up for questioning on this matter. The rabbi said he would be willing to be questioned, but not at the police station. Finally, five policemen showed up at his door today, with an order for the rabbi's arrest. They took him to the Russian Compound in Jerusalem. "The orders said 'arrest warrant,'" Mrs. Ariel later told Arutz-7, "but the leading investigator who came said that it was really not an arrest warrant." Adding to the confusion, someone who later phoned Rabbi Ariel told this story: "I was able to reach him in the police station. I asked him if he was under arrest, and he said no. Suddenly, I heard someone yelling in the background, 'What are you doing on the phone?! You can't do that, you're under arrest!' And then the phone went dead." Rabbi Ariel was released around three hours after he was arrested. Another member of the Sanhedrin, Professor Hillel Weiss, was recently questioned by police, for five hours, on similar matters. Rabbi Ariel was the head of the Hesder Yeshiva in the Sinai city of Yamit until the city was emptied and destroyed in 1982 in fulfillment of the peace treaty with Egypt. He served in the paratroopers unit that liberated the Old City of Jerusalem and the Western Wall in the Six-Day War of 1967.

A7 News: Rocket Fire on Isreal Continues
12.07.06 (12:16 pm)   [edit]
Rocket Fire on Israel Continues By Gil Zohar Another Kassam rocket was fired at Israel Wednesday afternoon from northern Gaza, the 17th since the shaky ceasefire went into effect November 26. The rocket landed in the western Negev near one of the kibbutzim in the area. There were no reports of injuries or damage. Security forces are trying to locate the precise location where the rocket landed. In two other separate violations of the ceasefire, the IDF wounded two Gaza residents Wednesday as the men approached the Israeli border in the area where Jewish settlements were uprooted in the August 2005 unilateral withdrawal. In one incident in northern Gaza, two men approached the border fence, the IDF spokesman said. One of them stood on a post and surveyed the area, while another appeared to be laying a mine near the border. Nearby IDF troops called on them to leave and fired warning shots in the air, driving the men off. A few minutes later, the men returned with a crowd of some 40 people. The soldiers again fired in the air. However, when one of the men continued working on the ground, the troops shot him, the army said. In the second incident, an Arab male approached the Erez crossing into Israel and ignored soldiers' warnings. The troops shot him in the lower body, the army said. Palestinian Authority health officials said two civilians were wounded in the legs by army fire in northern Gaza.

A7 News: Conservative Movement Approves Homosexual Rabbis
12.07.06 (12:14 pm)   [edit]
Conservative Movement Approves Homosexual Rabbis By Hillel Fendel Same-sex commitment ceremonies and homosexual rabbinical ordination are now permitted, according to the Rabbinical Assembly Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Conservative Movement. A committee of Conservative rabbis has issued several partially-contradictory opinions on homosexuality, including recognition of same-sex unions and ordination of gay rabbis. The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Conservative Movement's Rabbinical Assembly voted, by a narrow 13-12 vote, to permit the ordination of openly homosexual rabbis, both male and female. The resolution also permits a form of same-sex marriage, called a "commitment ceremony." Its passage led four rabbinical committee members to resign. Meeting in New York City, the committee also voted, by the same margin, to reaffirm the movement's policy of denying ordination to active homosexuals. The contradiction was reconciled by explaining that individual congregations would be permitted to make their own decisions as to whether to hire such rabbis or not. A third resolution encourages "reparative therapy" to help homosexuals live as heterosexuals when possible. The Committee turned down proposals to normalize or approve of homosexual relationships and acts. The resolutions are not considered binding, but are merely "guides so that the gays and lesbians can be welcomed into our congregation and communities and made to feel accepted,” said Law Committee Chairman Rabbi Kassel Abelson. Officials said that individual synagogues could continue to make their own decisions on these issues - leading to no genuine practical change. The Jewish Theological Seminary, the flagship school of Conservative Judaism, is to take up the issue in meetings of the faculty, the students and the trustees in the next few months. The New York Sun reported that Rabbi Jerome Epstein, the executive vice president of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, said that the organization - an umbrella group for some 750 North American Congregations - has hired an organizational change consultant to help the movement stay united despite its differences. The four members who resigned following the votes are: Rabbi Joel Roth, a professor of Talmud at the Jewish Theological Seminary, who said the decision was "outside the parameter of halakhic [Jewish legal] legitimacy and reasoning," Rabbi Leonard Levy of the Jewish Center of Forest Hills in Queens, Rabbi Mayer Rabinowitz, a JTS Talmud professor, and Rabbi Joseph Prouser of the Little Neck Jewish Center on Long Island. Orthodox Objections "We have compassion and concern for those with homosexual tendencies," the executive vice president of the Orthodox Union, Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, told the Sun. "Nevertheless, homosexual behavior is against the Talmud, the Bible, and the Codes. We cannot see ordaining as a rabbi anyone who flaunts well-established Jewish tradition." Agudath Israel of America called the decision in favor of homosexual ordination "tragic," saying, "It will no doubt cheer those who place contemporary mores above the Jewish mandate, but in the end, it seals the fate of a movement long mired in muddle and malaise."

A7 News: Calls for Olmert's Replacement from Far and Wide
12.07.06 (12:13 pm)   [edit]
Calls for Olmert´s Replacement From Far and Wide By Hillel Fendel The Rabbinical Congress for Peace, a coalition of over 1,200 rabbinic leaders, calls for a "democratic uprising" to replace the Olmert gov't. Full-page ads in US weeklies call for Olmert to resign. “Out of love for each and every Jew," the Rabbinical Congress (RCP) statement reads, "we call on the people of Israel and its leaders to begin a democratic uprising to immediately replace this government, which constitutes an ominous threat to the nation of Israel." Former Chief Rabbis Mordechai Eliyahu and Avraham Shapira are among the signatories, as is Rabbi Meir Mazuz, head of Israel's Tunisian Jewish community. The RCP labeled Olmert’s speech in Sde Boker, in which he offered to free terrorist prisoners and give up large areas of Judea and Samaria for a Palestinian state, "an extension of Sharon’s crimes." In its statement issued on Wednesday, the RCP states that “Olmert, as Sharon, continues to adhere to the advice of the false left-wing 'prophets' who have already caused catastrophic consequences in Israel in both the south and the north - instead of adhering to the true prophets, as expressed in the Jewish Code of Law [Orach Chaim 329] that any territorial concession to the enemy will only lead to bloodshed." Full-Page Ad Campaign At the same time, New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind has launched a campaign calling for Olmert to resign on his own. The campaign includes full-page ads in several American Anglo-Jewish weeklies throughout the U.S. The hard-hitting ads call Olmert "arrogant, delusional, irresponsible, inept" and more, in the face of growing threats from Hamas, Hizbullah, Iran, and Syria and following "the defeat in Lebanon." Furthermore, the ad states, "Olmert's desperation does not permit him to recognize the futility of disengagement, as he continues with his delusional fantasies about realignment... More than ever, Israel needs strong leadership. Olmert does not have what it takes: integrity, decisiveness, determination, vision, the strength and skill to lead Israel. Ehud, please resign, for the sake of Israel and the Jewish people." The ads are to appear in seven Anglo-Jewish weeklies in New York, New Jersey, Florida, California and Washington, D.C.

PLO Continues Role as Source of International Terror
12.07.06 (12:13 pm)   [edit]
PLO Continues Role as Source of International Terror By Gil Zohar Thirteen years after the signing of the Oslo Accords, the PLO remains proud of its role as the source of global terror and an inspiration for terrorists worldwide who have copied their techniques. In a broadcast on Palestinian Authority TV on November 14, Ahmed Hales Abu Maher - the Secretary of Fatah in the Gaza Strip - expressed pride that the Fatah "gives daily examples" that the world has "imitated," from the participation of children in combat to the widespread use of suicide bombers. click here http://trailer.mymarketing.co... for video “Oh warrior brothers, this is a nation that will never be broken, it is a revolution that will never be defeated. This is a nation that gives an example every day that is imitated across the world. We gave the world the children of the RPG [Rocket Propelled Grenades], we gave the world the children stone [-throwers], and we gave the world the male and female Martyrdom-Seekers [suicide bombers]." Palestinian Media Watch has documented dozens of examples of the Palestinian Authority glorifying individual acts of terrorism as well as the memory of terrorists past and present.

A7 News: Baker Report Demans Isreal Give Away Golan Heights
12.07.06 (12:11 pm)   [edit]
Baker Report Demands Israel Give Away Golan Heights By Yechiel Spira and Hillel Fendel Only a number of days after the UN passed a resolution calling Israel’s sovereignty over Jerusalem illegal, former US Secretary of State James Baker says Israel must leave the Golan Heights. The comprehensive report, which primarily addresses the situation in Iraq, was prepared by Baker and a former Democratic congressman, Lee Hamilton. It states that if the United States does not take a more leading role in the Mideast Israel-Arab conflict, there is no hope of America achieving its goals in the region. According to former Israeli UN Ambassador Dr. Dore Gold, the report indicates that American involvement in Iraq will diminish in the coming two years. He called the American demand that Israel retreat from the Golan Heights "worrisome." Speaking with reporters today, Olmert implied that he would be willing to withdraw from the Golan - but that Syria is not interested in peace. He said that previous Prime Ministers - he mentioned Barak, Netanyahu, and Sharon - were willing to consider such withdrawals, but that the question "is not whether Israel would be willing to withdraw, but what Syria would give in return." Olmert said that negotiations with Syria are currently not on the agenda because of "Syria's undercutting behavior and its support for Hamas." Asked specifically about the Baker-Hamilton report, Olmert said that Israel objects to any linkage between the Iraqi problem and Israel. Appearing unruffled by the report, Olmert said that he believes that President Bush does not agree with its conclusions. The Baker-Hamilton report was greeted enthusiastically by leading Palestinian terrorists, who said it proves that "Islamic resistance" works and America can ultimately be defeated. "The report proves that this is the era of Islam and of jihad," Abu Ayman, a senior leader of Islamic Jihad in northern Samaria told Aaron Klein of WorldNetDaily. "The Americans came to the conclusion that Islam is the new giant of the world and it would be clever to reduce hostilities with this giant," Abu Ayman said. "In the Quran the principle of the rotation is clear and according to this principle the end of the Americans and of all non-believers is getting closer." The Golan Heights was liberated by Israel in the June 1967 Six Day War and was annexed as an integral part of the State of Israel in the 1980s. It holds great strategic value, in that Israel's presence there precludes Syrian attacks from the highlands overlooking the Sea of Galilee and the Galilee Panhandle. The Baker-Hamilton report calls for a peace conference mimicking the Madrid model - a regional summit that would be aimed at solving the conflict between Israel, the PA (Palestinian Authority), Syria and Lebanon. In addition to an Israeli withdrawal from the Golan, the report calls upon Israel to recognize the establishment of a Palestinian state. The report demands that Syria halt its interference in Lebanon’s affairs, as well as cease its pro-terrorist policies on behalf of ongoing Hizbullah anti-Israel operations in southern Lebanon. It calls on Israel to withdraw from the Golan in exchange for a comprehensive peace treaty with Damascus that would enjoy American backing. The authors say that the U.S. would provide security guarantees and an offer of troops in the Golan to help compensate Israel for the loss of the strategically vital area. The issue of ongoing Iranian efforts to build a nuclear weapon was not the focus of attention in the report. It briefly called on Tehran to comply with the demands of the international community and cease nuclear enrichment efforts. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has opted to avoid commenting in depth on the report. He said today he had not yet read it. Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk a-Shara expressed his country’s willingness to enter into peace negotiations with Israel. A-Shara stated Damascus is willing to reach an agreement with Israel with the understanding the Golan Heights must be returned to Syria as part of such an agreement. Former National Security Advisor Gen. (ret.) Giora Eiland stated US President George W. Bush is caught between a rock and a hard place. He explained that while the US government is anxious to bring an end to the Israel-PA conflict, Mr. Bush is not seeking to make any major changes in Washington’s relationship with Israel. Gen. (ret.) Uzi Dayan, another former national security advisor, stated that the report will have a direct bearing on American strategy, but that there is no need for concern in Israel. He added that what should concern Israelis is the "lack of vision and leadership."

A7 News: Knesset Defense Expert: U.S. Stance on Iran is Worrisome
12.07.06 (12:10 pm)   [edit]
Knesset Defense Expert: U.S. Stance on Iran is Worrisome By Hillel Fendel "The claim that Iran is developing nuclear weapons just for defense purposes" - as the candidate for U.S. Defense Secretary, Robert Gates, told the Senate - "is very worrisome," says MK Shteinitz. Knesset Member Yuval Shteinitz, who chaired the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee until this year, commented with concern this morning on what may be the new U.S. policy on Iran. Asked during his Senate confirmation hearings if he thought that President Ahmadinejad was "kidding" in his Holocaust denial and calls to destroy Israel, Gates said, "No, I don't think he's kidding. But I think that there are, in fact, higher powers in Iran than the president. And… while they are certainly pressing, in my opinion, for a nuclear capability, I think that they would see it in the first instance as a deterrent. " Gates also broke with tradition by asserting that Israel has nuclear capabilities. Explaining Iran's need for deterrence, Gates said that Iran is "surrounded by powers with nuclear weapons - Pakistan to their east, the Russians to the north, the Israelis to the west, and us in the Persian Gulf." In response to another question, Gates said that no one can provide Israel with an assurance that Iran would not attack Israel with a nuclear weapon. He said that he would favor an American attack on Iran only "if critical American interests are threatened" and "as a last resort." "The claim that Iran is developing nuclear weapons for defense and deterrence purposes is not compatible with Iran's declaration about wiping Israel off the map," Shteinitz said. Making such claims, he said, "is liable to harm the attempts to stop Iran's nuclear program." Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, said this week that Iran will complete its nuclear research and development work by March 2007. Iran plans to soon expand its atomic work by installing 3,000 uranium-enriching centrifuges, enabling it to produce at least one warhead a year. Gates also said at the hearings that he favors open dialogue with Syria and Iran, as called for in the recent Baker-Hamilton report, but said he has no positive expectations regarding Iran. U.S. President Bush has opposed talking with Iran, but is now expected to go along with the idea. Israeli security elements view Gates's remarks with alarm. Yediot Acharonot defense commentator Alex Fishman says they feel that Iran has won the latest round of arm-twisting against the U.S., that Iran can confidently continue its nuclear program without fear, and that Iran's influence in the region is increasing while that of the U.S. is declining. Hamas, too, feels this way, and has hardened its stance regarding a national unity government with Fatah and the release of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit. An editorial in the English-language daily Jerusalem Post stated that Gates's remarks are These are "shocking responses... for what they reveal about the thinking of the man poised to become the top defense adviser of the president of the United States. Gates's first instinct when asked about Iran's potential nuclear capability is not to explain why he views such a prospect as inimical to US interests, but why it might not be such a dangerous thing. Gates assures us that although Ahmadinejad may be wacko, his Iranian leadership higher-ups have got to be more responsible... [and] if this sunny analysis is wrong and Iran lobs a weapon of mass destruction at Israel? Well, that's a risk that Gates seems willing to take."

Daily Thought 12/07/2006 - 16 Kislev 5767
12.07.06 (12:08 pm)   [edit]
Wisdom, Not Hammers "A home," wrote Solomon the Wise, "is built with wisdom." And not with a hammer. Because wisdom is the glue of beauty. Wisdom, meaning the ability to step back and see all of the picture, the past and, most important, the future to which all this leads. To see the truth inside each thing. Without wisdom, there are only fragments. With wisdom, there is a whole. And there is peace between all the parts of that whole.

Folks I'd Love To Know What Happened To Them .. Where They Are
12.06.06 (12:11 am)   [edit]
Lately, I can't help but think about a guy I knew back jr high who had a crush on me. For some reason lately, he's been on my mind a lot. I would REALLY, REALLY looooooove to find out where he is; what's he's up to; if he's married w/kids; if divorced with kids; widowed .... what he has been up to these last 33 years since I last saw him. This guy's name is David Jensen. Funny how some folks just stick out in your mind .... also that, for some unknown reason, you start thinking about them and wondering what is going on with them. Sorta like a "Where are they now?" show but for old acquaintances rather than former rock/tv/movie stars. I would absolutely LOVE to know where David Jensen is. We went to St. Anthony's during the 1973-1974 and 1974-1975 school years after he transferred to my school. He was going to Blessed Sacrament prior to that. If we ever crossed paths between the time we got out of jr high and the time I moved out of Virginia in 2002, I don't know. I know I sure didn't recognize him and, if he remembered me, he never said anything to me. I wish he had tho. I'd love to meet up with him now .... catch up on what has been going on since jr high. Hopefully, he is single ....
