A7News: IDF Shoots Lebanese Soldier, Lebanon Says Isreal Crossed Border
02.09.07 (7:12 pm)   [edit]
IDF Shoots Lebanese Soldier, Lebanon Says Israel Crossed Border
 By Ezra HaLevi

A Lebanese soldier was shot when IDF soldiers returned fire after coming under attack while operating just south of the northern Blue Line border with Lebanon early Thursday morning.

Earlier this week, IDF troops uncovered four explosive devices in the area planted by Hizbollah. Wednesday evening was the first round of cross-border clashes since the UN-brokered cease fire at the end of last summer’s fighting.

The IDF spokesman explained that the IDF activity in the area, which though behind a border fence Israel set up, is still located within Israeli territory, was to neutralize the explosive devices and search for more possible explosives in the area. “Lebanese soldiers nearby fired shots into the air,” an IDF statement recounted. “In response, the IDF communicated to the Lebanese Army via UNIFIL that it has no intention of harming its soldiers. Despite the message, Lebanese soldiers opened fire in the direction of our soldiers, who identified the source of the fire, engaged the source, and confirmed a direct hit.”

The IDF released a statement that it will continue to “act whenever necessary in order to protect the full sovereignty of the State of Israel while strengthening its security arrangements in the north and along the Blue Line in accordance with UN Resolution 1701.”

Although the IDF says there is no truth to the claim, Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora insists that IDF troops crossed the Lebanese border line prior to the gun battle.

France’s ambassador to the United Nations has demanded that the UN Security Council discuss the incident. "We think that the council should have an exchange of views on this issue, which is an important one," France's UN Ambassador Jean-Marc de la Sabliere said. "I am just going to ask for a briefing from the secretariat."

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) backed Israel's claims. After investigating the area, UNIFIL officials concluded that IDF forces did not, at any point, cross into Lebanon.

A7News: Protesters Block Jerusalem Traffic for Pollard

Protesters Block Jerusalem Traffic For Pollard
 By Ezra HaLevi

Protesters in Jerusalem blocked traffic Thursday evening on Jaffa Road to demand Israel work to release Jonathan Pollard. Police used violence to clear the thoroughfare.

Scores of protesters met at central Jerusalem’s Zion Square, holding placards reading “Free Jonathan Pollard” and bearing pictures of the former naval intelligence officer, serving the third decade of a life-sentence he received for passing information to Israel.

“At 6:25 PM, a dozen of the protesters ran into Jaffa Road, blocking it,” Arutz-7 photographer Josh Shamsi reported from the scene. “Police removed them, two at a time, but others ran to replace them. Upon being put down, those who were dragged away continued to return as well.”

Two leaders of the road blocking, which was carried out despite a statement by Pollard’s wife Esther, were arrested. One of the men, Yekutiel Ben Yaakov (formerly Mike Guzofsky), was choked by police officers during his arrest.

“Four to six police officers were dedicated to pulling each of them off the street,” Shamsi reported. “While police attempted to restrain them, both men continued to chant. At one point an officer had Ben Yaakov in a choke hold and could be heard quietly urging him to ‘shshshsh.’ After being released from the choke hold Ben Yaakov continued to chant loudly. He was eventually and with difficulty, dragged and shoved into a police cruiser alongside the other man.

“After about 6 minutes the men were transferred to a second car that had pulled up alongside the first police car and were driven away. Most people dispersed but a few stayed behind and continued to chant, sing and demonstrate with posters.”

A7News: Gush Katif Evictee Wins Lawsuit Agains PLO in US Court

Gush Katif Evictee Wins Lawsuit Against PLO in US Court
 By Ezra HaLevi

An American oleh (Jewish immigrant to Israel) and Gaza evictee was awarded $16 million from the PLO by a US court due to a 2002 attack by an Arab terrorist.

Moshe Saperstein, who lost an arm fighting in the Yom Kippur War, was shot in the hand during a terror attack on the Kissufim Corridor, the main road leading to Gush Katif. One woman and two soldiers were murdered in the attack, which ended with Saperstein running down the terrorist with his car.

Following the lead of a dozen other terror victims holding American citizenship, Saperstein filed a suit in the United States against the Palestinian Authority and the PLO for complicity in the attack. A federal jury in Florida awarded Saperstein $16 million, but due to an American law involving victims of foreign terror groups the sum could be tripled.

Lawyers for the PA claimed in preliminary hearings that both the PA and the PLO are immune from prosecution due to Palestine being a sovereign state. That argument was rejected by the court and the PA subsequently did not attend the trials.

Saperstein is a prolific writer, dispatching lengthy personal-style emails from his home in the Gush Katif community of N’vei Dekalim prior to its destruction and his eviction in 2005. The emails were forwarded far and wide and published on several web sites, including Arutz-7.

After the expulsion, Moshe and his wife Rachel lived for nearly a year in a small hotel room at the run-down Jerusalem Gold Hotel, where they and their neighbors were placed by the government. They now reside in Nitzan, the grid of double-size trailers located near Ashkelon, awaiting a permanent housing solution.

The money awarded to the Sapersteins must now be collected by identifying PLO assets in the US and elsewhere and having them confiscated by the court.

A7News: Rockets Strike Western Negev and Ashkelon
02.09.07 (7:10 pm)   [edit]
Rockets Strike Western Negev and Ashkelon
 By Ezra HaLevi

Kassam rockets from Gaza struck the western Negev Thursday. One hit southern Ashkelon. The Supreme Court called for increased armoring of Gaza-region communities.

One rocket landed near Sderot, two near a Kibbutz in the Sha’ar HaNegev region and a fourth in the southern Ashkelon industrial zone. No injuries or damage was reported in any of the attacks.

Chief Supreme Court Justice Dorit Beinish addressed a petition by Sderot residents Thursday, criticizing the manner in which schools and public places are being fortified against missiles attacks. While the classrooms of first, second and third graders are being fortified, fourth-graders and onward will have fifteen seconds to dash to shelters after the Tzeva Adom (Color Red) early-warning system sounds. “[15 seconds] is not enough," Beinish said, ordering the State to try to come up with a better solution that would not foster panic each time the siren sounds (which could be multiple times daily).

In Tul Karem , IDF and Police Special Forces arrested a Hamas terrorist who was part of the cell responsible for the Pesach Massacre at the Park Hotel in March 2002.

Anwar Ahmad Daud was involved in other attacks aside from the Park Hotel bombing as well. He was handed over to interrogators. Elsewhere in Tul Karem, IDF soldiers discovered a bomb, which was disarmed by IDF sappers.

Five PA Arabs died in an explosion at a gas station in Ramallah Thursday at 3:30 PM. The gas station collapsed and customers and employees subsequently fell into a crater created by the explosion. IDF rescue teams were dispatched to assist the wounded and Magen David Adom offered to supplement the Red Crescent's services.

IDF forces shot an woman who tried to stab soldiers at the Ein Bidan crossing east of Shechem Thursday. The woman was lightly injured.

A policewoman shot a PA Arab man trying to run her down in a stolen vehicle near Shechem Wednesday. The car sped toward an impromptu road-block set up to catch car-thieves and refused to slow down when police signaled and called out to stop. The car-thief was taken to a Tel Aviv hospital for treatment.

A7News: Gaza Celebrates Unity Deal but U.S., Isreal not so Sure

Gaza Celebrates Unity Deal But U.S., Israel Not so Sure
By Hana Levi Julian and Ezra HaLevi

Celebratory gunfire erupted in the streets of Gaza after news that a Fatah-Hamas unity deal was reached Thursday night. The U.S. and Israel greeted the news with caution.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), who took over after Yassir Arafat died, designated PA Prime Minister and Hamas chairman Ismail Haniyeh to form a new government within the next five weeks.

Celebrations have broken out in Gaza and one Kassam rocket was already fired Friday morning toward the city of Sderot.

It was also agreed as part of the deal that Hamas would uphold agreements with Israel signed by the previous, Fatah-led PA government.

“I call upon you to respect international resolutions and the agreements signed by the Palestine Liberation Organization,” said Abbas to Haniyeh during the signing ceremony.

No mention was made of the other two international demands that any PA government, including one controlled by Hamas, must formally recognize the State of Israel and renounce terrorism. Hamas has adamantly refused to comply with both.

The third, compliance with previously signed agreements, was resolved in the Saudi-brokered unity deal.

“Israel expects the new Palestinian government to accept and respect all three of the international community’s principles,” Prime Minster Ehud Olmert’s spokeswoman Miri Eisen said in response to the announcement.

British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett was hopeful, saying “We welcome the ongoing efforts to end the violence and promote intra-Palestinian reconciliation.”

US States Department Spokesman Tom Casey stood by American demands that the PA fulfill the Quartet’s requirements. Casey told reporters that any new PA government must recognize Israel, renounce violence against Israel and abide by previous agreements.

Israel’s Minister for Strategic Affairs Avigdor Lieberman (Yisrael Beiteinu) said that the proper response to the PA unity government is an Isaeli national unity government. He set up meetings with all of Israel’s right-wing and religious parties for the coming week to discuss such a possibility.

Lieberman said Israel needs to be unified and strong in the face of the possibility that the Palestinian Authority, still ruled by Hamas, will now gain international acceptance and support due to the Mecca Agreement.

A7News: Fatah-Hamas Unity Deal Reached in Mecca
02.09.07 (7:08 pm)   [edit]
Fatah-Hamas Unity Deal Reached in Mecca By Hana Levi Julian The warring Fatah and Hamas factions in the Palestinian Authority government reached a deal Thursday night after marathon talks in Mecca. The agreement included a promise by Hamas to “respect” previous peace agreements with Israel, according to the Al-Jazeera network. PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas signed the deal with Damascus-based arch-terrorist and Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal. Haniyeh has to wait for Mashaal to give a green light before going ahead with any major moves, including the prisoner swap deal to release kidnapped IDF Cpl. Gilad Shalit. Mashaal said after the signing that the new agreement would “unify our ranks. There is a commitment to unity. We will preserve this partnership.” Abbas said the agreement would “satisfy our people…and bring us to the shores of peace… This initiative has been crowned with success.” Mashaal added that the international community “must respect our accord, recognize our Palestinian reality and deal with it seriously.” Saudi Monarch “Resolved” Disagreements Saudi Arabian King Abdullah played a pivotal role in forcing the two sides to resolve their issues and wrap up the talks before the start of Friday’s Muslim Sabbath. Abdullah, according to the Ma’an news agency, stepped in when the talks broke down over the wording of the agreement. The news agency reported that “the contentious word ‘commitment’, and its alternative, ‘respect’, in relation to abiding by previous agreements, [was] an issue to be included in the letter of entrustment for the emerging Prime Minister, was the last obstacle to an agreement...Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz [has now been] successful in resolving this issue.” The king had ordered both parties to come to Mecca to work out their differences after a year of escalating fighting between the two factions in a struggle for control of the PA and its international funding. Attempts between PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and PA Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh to form a unity government on their own failed repeatedly over the year. Outside mediators, including Egyptian intelligence officials and Jordanian leaders, were also unable to stop the bloodshed which left hundreds dead and hundreds of others wounded, including women and children. Agreement on Government Composition The reconciliation accord stipulates that Haniyeh will remain PA prime minister. The Fatah group will name his new deputy. Hamas will nominate a minister of state and planning and Fatah will nominate an independent minister of state. Fatah appointed 55-year-old Hammuda Jarwan to head the key interior ministry, which controls the PA security forces. Previous reports said an independent would be appointed as interior minister. Thursday night, however, a Hamas official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters that Abbas “will choose an independent interior minister from among five names that will be submitted to him by Hamas.” Jarwan heads Fatah’s organization and recruitment in Lebanon and is a former military attorney general and has been the head of the military courts. The Fatah spokesman announced that Dr. Salam Fayyad was nominated as finance minister. Former culture minister Ziad Abu Amr will become the head of the ministry of foreign affairs. Hamas will receive a total of nine portfolios, leaving the terrorist group which kidnapped Shalit in control of the PA government. Endowments, economy, labor, local governance, sports and youth, communication, justice and education all went to Hamas. Fatah, whose al-Aksa Martyrs Brigade terrorist group carried out the suicide bombing in the Israeli resort city of Eilat less than two weeks ago, was given six portfolios, including health, social welfare, public works, transportation, agriculture and prisoners’ affairs. The remaining portfolios – tourism, information, women’s affairs and culture - will be distributed among the other government factions.
